- The IAFF was organized February 28, 1918, during the first annual IAFF
Convention held in Washington DC.
- There were 36 firefighter delegates in attendance who adopted the IAFF
constitution and by-laws;
- Today the IAFF represents over 267,000 firefighters and emergency
workers across the US and Canada;

- To organize all firefighters and emergency medical workers;
- To secure just compensation for their services and equitable settlement
of disputes;
- To promote as safe and healthy a working environment for the
firefighters as is possible through modern technology;

- To place the members of the Association on a higher plane of skill and
efficiency;
- To promote harmonious relations between firefighters and their
employers;

- To encourage the formation of local unions, state and provincial
associations and joint councils;
- To encourage the formation of sick and death benefit funds;
- To promote the research and treatment of burns and other related heath
problems common to firefighters;

knowledge of modern and improved methods of firefighting and prevention;
and
- To cultivate friendship and fellowship among its members;

- Today the IAFF is the primary advocate for providing fire fighters with
the tools they need to perform their jobs;
- The union also provides a strong voice in the development and
implementation of new training and equipment, and has worked hard to
advance the proper staffing of fire departments;

- The IAFF is involved in federal legislation for fire fighters across the
country;
- The IAFF is one of the fastest growing labor organizations today;
- IAFF General President Harold A. Schaitberger was elected in 2000, and re-elected in
2004 for another 4 year term;

- The Professional Fire Fighters Association of Louisiana is the
statewide link to the IAFF and is essential to our legislative efforts.

- The Professional Firefighters Association of LA. is associated with the
IAFF and has 2,791 members;
- The PFFA of LA State President Chad Major , is employed by the Baton
Rouge Fire Department;
- President Major represents 36 locals across La. and growing;

- The PFFA of LA. has lobbied state legislatures for retirement benefits;
- Disability benefits, which are more prevalent due to the inherent
dangers of the job;
- Supplemental pay;

- Annual 2% mandatory pay raise for emergency workers;
- 52 week sick leave law;
- Captain-driver law, and many more laws that assist and protect fire
fighters;

- The Lafayette Professional Firefighters Association represents its
members in service to the community, improving working conditions, and
public safety.

- The Lafayette Professional Firefighters Association, Local 619, was
organized in 1939 and is associated with the PFFA of LA. and the IAFF;
- Donald Chauvin is the Local’s President and is serving in his 5th
term;
- The LPFA represents 212 of the 254 employees of the Lafayette Fire
Department;

- The LPFA has and continues to work hard to provide adequate staffing,
safety, and a livable wage for its members;
- Each member receives great benefits just by being a member;
- As a member you receive a death benefit through legislation on the state
level. If a member dies in the line of duty, his family will receive a burial policy;

- The LPFA helps the less fortunate in the community whenever a family is
burned out of their home through the Fire Victims Relief Fund;
- Fire Victim Relief Fund monies are comprised of membership dues and local fund raisers
administered by a board member ;
- Qualifying families receive two nights lodging and a gift card to
further assist with food or clothing;

- In closing, the LPFA, PFFA of LA and the IAFF are great organizations to
belong to, with great benefits just for being a member.
