3rd Annual Awards Banquet
June 25, 2005
Hotel Acadiana
1801 W. Pinhook
Rd.
Lafayette, LA

Lafayette's Bravest were
properly recognized for their accomplishments in the best possible fashion, by
their peers and friends. The evening's program got off to a good start when,
before the firefighter awards program had even begun, the entire fireline
received a plaque of appreciation from Administrative Assistant Myra Romero for
the Blood Drive that was conducted for her son after he suffered a ruptured
spleen in a playground accident. Among the distinguished guests were Senator
Nick Gautreaux, Representative Don Trahan, and Councilman Bruce Conque. Also in
attendance were Dr. Kenneth Burke, Chad Major State President of the PFFA of LA,
Chief Benoit, Kelly Allgood and Annie Grogan from MDA, and over 100 friends and
family members.
Dale Brasseaux, President of
the Lafayette Central Trades, was our guest speaker and he did not disappoint.
Mr. Brasseaux gave a rousing speech about the importance of being organized and
joining the Union. He touched on the current issues facing our association and
clearly stated that he feels we should be adequately compensated and that the
pending lawsuits should be properly addressed by LCG once complete. Mr.
Brasseaux would later receive the Media Member Award for his continuous coverage
of firefighter issues and providing live access to his AOC program.
Democratic Senator Nick
Gautreaux and Republican Representative Don Trahan addressed the group and their
attendance and support is a testament to the IAFF's new vision of supporting
politicians who support public safety. Each spoke highly of the Fire Service and
our Association and proclaimed the efficiency of our lobbying efforts on the
state level to preserve benefits for firefighters everywhere in Louisiana.
The Benediction was given by
Dr. Kenneth Burke who is the father of Eric Burke and serves as the Fire
Department Chaplain. The posting and retiring of the colors was performed by the
Honor Guard.

conducted a study of firefighter gloves and recommended the current
style. He worked with local agencies to distribute stuffed animals and
Beanie babies to children involved in emergency incidents. Designed the
old zone book system for emergency vehicles and is currently working on
new books with new quadrants. Collected information about the health
effects of the fight or flight syndrome induced by the radio dispatch of
fire calls when not prepared or forewarned. This research led to the
revised method of alerting stations of a pending fire call and in
particular the alerting of only the responding station at night.
